Karakol Gorge is a mountain pass located on the southern shore of Issyk-Kul, in the eastern part of the Tersky Ala-too mountain range near the city of Karakol. The gorge is one of the most visited places in the Issyk-Kul region due to its unique natural features, length and relative accessibility. The gorge is a protected area and its total length is 40 km.

Karakol Gorge is a center for many mountain tourists due to the presence of trekking routes in the Tersky Ala Tu range. In summer, climbers set off from their base camps to Karakol and Zigit, the two highest peaks of Tersky Ala-Tou in Przewalski, Telman, Gastello, Zhukov, Dimitrov and Tersky Ala-Tou. Passing through the Karakol Gorge, one can reach the beautiful Ala Kulu Lake, the Golden Alashan Gorge and the Jeti Oguz Gorge. The modern ski resort of Karakol is located 7 km from the city of Karakol, Kyrgyzstan.

In Soviet times it was used to train the national Olympic team. Today, ‘Karakol’ is an ideal place not only for training athletes, but also for active recreation. ‘Caracol’ ski resort is unique in its natural conditions. The main base is located at an altitude of 2300 meters, on the slopes of the Tien Shan, in a majestic coniferous forest.
