Issyk-Ata gorge

The Issyk-Ata gorge is known from ancient sources. The famous Issyk-Ata hot springs, ancient Buddha statues and many other attractions are located here: in the XII-XIV centuries, the gorge was the cradle of Buddhism in this region. Thanks to this, Issyk-Ata today is not only a unique natural monument, but also a place with a great history.
Issyk-Ata Resort is the oldest resort in the Chui Valley, operating since 1895. It has long been known for its geothermal activity and in Soviet times was one of the most famous resorts in Kyrgyzstan. Sulphurous water is useful for diseases of the musculoskeletal system, digestive system and other ailments. The resort has a heated swimming pool, which is open all year round. Access to the pool is paid.
There are many natural attractions in the gorge. In the lower part of the gorge there is an interesting tributary of the Issyk-Ata-Tuyuk. Just 1.5 km from the resort there is a 10-meter marble waterfall, one of the most visited objects of Issyk-Ata. Bala-Partak and Jary-Tash waterfalls are also located in the gorge. In addition, at the foot of the inaccessible Botovy Mountain (Mount Byutii), the gorge is divided into two parts – Byutii and Ayak-Kel.
There are several lakes on Issyk-Ata. On the right side of the gorge, called Ayak-Kel, there is a chain of three small lakes, the largest of which is Ortho-Kel.
How to get to the Issyk-Kuat Gorge
The Issyk-Ata Gorge is located 40 km east of Bishkek. You can get to it by public transport. Minibus No. 316 departs daily from the Eastern Bus Station of Bishkek. You can also get there by taxi or private car. The highways in the gorge are of good quality. Entrance to the gorge is free. Parking is available.
There are two roads leading to the gorge: lower and upper. The lower road goes along the Chui Gorge and passes through the village of Ivanovka, and the upper one goes through the mountain gorge, through the villages of Gornaya Mayevka and Toguz-Bulak. The upper road has less traffic and is more convenient for cycling.
