Kara-Keche gorge

Wester_m 12.02.2024

The Kara-Keche Gorge is a long gorge in the west of the Naryn region, known for the Kara-Keche pass of the same name, separating the Jumgal Valley from Son-Kul, and the largest coal deposit in Kyrgyzstan.

The gorge is located in the Moldo-Ashuu mountains and has a length of 50 km. The nature of the gorge is very remarkable, as is its relief. The slopes of the gorge are composed of red rocks, which create a wonderful contrast with the fir trees and other green vegetation growing on the slopes of these mountains. By the way, many plants grow in the gorge. As soon as you enter the gorge from the side of the Jumgal Gorge, it immediately attracts attention.
At the end of the gorge, at an altitude of 2800 m, there is the Kara-Keche coal deposit. Coal mining is carried out here in an open way, and the quarry, which is alien to the mountains, seems to fit seamlessly into the landscape. On one of the branches of the quarry there is a small blue lake.

The highest point of the gorge is the Kara Keche pass, located at an altitude of 3348 m. From here you can see both Son-Kul and the gorge. The Kara-Keche Gorge is located in the Moldo-Ashuu ridge, south of the village of Bash-Kuundagi in the Jumgal Valley.  You can get to it from the south near the village of Bash-Kuundagi or from the southwest of the Son-Kul valley through the Kara-Keche pass. A dirt road also runs through the valley.
