The national currency is the Kyrgyz som (KGS).

Can I exchange US dollars and euros?
Yes. US dollars and euros can be easily exchanged at banks and official exchange offices throughout the country, especially in Bishkek and Osh.
Cash is still widely used, and bank cards are not accepted everywhere.

The majority of the population practices Islam (Sunni). There are also Christians and followers of other religions.

How religious is the country?
Kyrgyzstan is generally moderate and secular. Religion plays an important role culturally, but everyday life is not strictly regulated by religious rules

There is no strict dress code. In cities, people dress casually and modernly.

When should I dress more modestly?
When visiting mosques, rural areas, or traditional events, modest clothing is recommended:

  • shoulders and knees covered
  • women may wear a headscarf if they wish (usually not strictly required)

The Kyrgyz language is the state language.
Russian has official status and is widely spoken, especially in cities, business, and tourism.

Can I get by with Russian or English?
Yes, Russian is enough in most urban and tourist areas.
English is increasingly spoken by younger people, but it is not yet widespread.

Kyrgyz food is hearty, flavorful, and comforting, with lots of meat, noodles, rice, and fresh dairy products.

What dishes should I try?

  • Beshbarmak – boiled meat with noodles, the national dish
  • Lagman – hand-pulled noodles in a tasty meat and vegetable broth
  • Plov – rice with meat and vegetables
  • Manty – steamed meat dumplings
  • Samsy – baked meat or vegetable pastries
  • Fresh bread & dairy – especially local cheeses and yogurt

Is the food good?
Yes! Kyrgyz cuisine is rich and satisfying, loved by both locals and travelers. Street food, local eateries, and yurt meals all offer delicious, authentic flavors.
