History of the World Nomad Games and What to Expect in 2026 in Kyrgyzstan
The World Nomad Games were first conceptualized in 2012 by the Government of Kyrgyzstan and the World Ethnogames Confederation. The idea was to create an international platform dedicated to the preservation of nomadic culture, traditional sports, ancient customs, and the cultural heritage of nomadic civilizations.
The first World Nomad Games took place on September 9–14, 2014, in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan, on the shores of Lake Issyk-Kul. The event brought together 583 athletes from 19 countries competing in 10 types of ethnosports. Alongside the competitions, the Games featured a large cultural program showcasing yurts, traditional music, crafts, and nomadic lifestyles.
The Games expanded rapidly:
- 2016 (Kyrgyzstan) — over 1,200 athletes and more than 20 ethnosports.
- 2018 (Kyrgyzstan) — continued international growth and diversification.
- 2022 (Turkey) — the first time the Games were hosted outside Kyrgyzstan.
- 2024 (Kazakhstan) — further expansion with dozens of nations participating.
- 2026 (Kyrgyzstan) — continued international growth and diversification.
The mission of the World Nomad Games is to revive, preserve, and promote the unique heritage of nomadic civilizations, offering a global cultural and sporting festival unlike any other.
