From Sacred Springs to Issyk-Kul: Preparing for the World Nomad Games
Kyrgyzstan is gearing up for the 6th edition of the World Nomad Games in 2026, returning to its homeland for this major international event. As part of the preparations, the cultural initiative “Unity Caravan” has been launched to highlight the importance of water and symbolize national unity.
The project will involve all regions of the country. For the Kyrgyz people, water has long represented purity, life, and the continuity of traditions. Within the framework of the Games, it also symbolizes renewal and harmony. By the end of 2025, regions will select their baatyrs — local representatives — and ambassadors, prominent figures who will participate in the initiative, while also designating sacred water sources.
In June 2026, the first baatyr will journey to the glaciers of Khan Tengri to fill the country’s main ceremonial vessel, which will be kept in Bishkek as a symbol of national unity. Meanwhile, each region will collect water from their sacred springs into separate vessels and establish local water repositories. By August 15, all regional vessels will be transported to the capital and placed in the central water repository.
The project will culminate on August 31, 2026, during the opening ceremony of the World Nomad Games. Water from all regions of Kyrgyzstan, as well as participating countries, will be combined in a single vessel, representing friendship, respect, and cooperation among nations.
The Games themselves will take place from August 31 to September 6, 2026, with the opening ceremony in Bishkek. Main competitions and the closing ceremony will be held along the northern shore of Issyk-Kul, including Cholpon-Ata and Kyrchyn Gorge. Over 80–90 countries are expected to participate, making this edition one of the largest in the history of the Games.
