This 2-day group tour takes you from Khiva across the border, starting with Kunya-Urgench, a remarkable historical site and once the capital of the Khorezm Empire, before heading to the Darvaza Gas Crater, a stunning natural gas burn-off in the heart of the Karakum Desert. Spend a night under the desert stars, enjoying a fire-cooked meal while connecting with fellow travelers from around the globe.

For solo travelers or small groups of friends and family, we recommend joining our Turkmenistan Small Group Tour, as traveling with a group increases the chances of securing a Turkmenistan visa.

Price includes:

  • All transportation throughout the trip;

Tour itinerary

Khiva – Darvaza Gas Crater

Depart from Khiva at 08:30, heading toward the Shavat-Dashoguz border crossing (60 km, ~1 hour). Upon arrival, complete passport and customs procedures at both border points. Once you exit the control zone, our driver or guide will be waiting outside with a sign displaying your name.

Meet your Turkmenistan guide and continue the journey to the Darvaza Gas Crater, located deep in the Karakum Desert (270 km, ~4 hours). Upon arrival, set up camp and enjoy a stunning sunset while savoring a freshly prepared, fire-cooked dinner near the glowing crater.

Spend the night camping in tents under the desert sky.
Meals included: Dinner.

Darvaza – Kunya-Urgench – Khiva

After a camp-style breakfast, depart for Kunya-Urgench, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (370 km, ~5 hours). Explore the historical complex, including the Kutlug Timur Minaret, Tyurabek-Khanym Mausoleum, Tekesh Mausoleum, Il Arslan Mausoleum, Caravanserai Gate, and other significant landmarks.

Enjoy lunch at a local café before heading to the Dashoguz-Shavat border crossing. Complete border procedures on both sides, meet your driver, and continue the journey back to Khiva (60 km, ~1 hour).
