ENTRY CONDITIONS

Passports should have a minimum of six months’ validity from your date of arrival in Turkmenistan

1a. Visas Citizens of all foreign countries traveling to Turkmenistan require a visa.

To apply for a visa to enter Turkmenistan a letter of invitation (LOI) is required in advance. For your convenience, we will obtain the LOI on your behalf from the State Migration Services of Turkmenistan.
In order to obtain this, we require you to send us a copy of a valid international passport (the full page that clearly shows all text, photo, signature, and bar code) and an original color passport-sized photograph; photocopies or home-printed photographs are not acceptable. The whole photo page of the passport must be scanned, and to avoid any confusion, it is best if the scan simply shows all four edges of the page
The ‘Personal Information’ form sent with your confirmation documents must also be returned to us to accompany the LOI application. These must be sent to us no later than 5 weeks prior to departure. Applications can be submitted as early as 3 months prior to the scheduled departure date.
Your LOI will be sent to you in good time to obtain your visa prior to departure.

Once you have received your LOI, you can proceed with your visa application directly with the Turkmenistan authorities or by using a reputable visa processing company. The usual visa processing time from submission is 10 working days; an express service may be available at an additional cost.

Visas can be arranged on arrival at land borders with Iran (Bajgiran/Gaudan and Mashhad/Serags), Kazakhstan (Temir Baba/Garabogaz), Uzbekistan (Bukhara/Farab or Khiva/Shavat). Entry into Turkmenistan (and therefore obtaining a visa) at the Khodjeili land border post is not possible at the moment of writing.

Visa cost if obtained on arrival at Ashgabat Airport (subject to change)
UK nationals (up to 10 days’ duration) (70+45=) 115 USD (to be paid by each person, even if all arrive on 1 LOI)
All other nationals (up to 10 days’ duration) (40+45=) 85 USD per person (to be paid by each person, even if all arrive on 1 LOI)
Plus 4 USD administration fee per person (or per LOI, if more people on 1 LOI)

UK nationals (11-20 days’ duration) (100+45=) 145 USD (to be paid by each person, even if all arrive on 1 LOI)
All other nationals (11-20 days’ duration) (60+45=) 105 USD (to be paid by each person, even if all arrive on 1 LOI)
Plus 4 USD administration fee per person (or per LOI, if more people on 1 LOI)

In case travelers come in via land borders with Iran, Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan:

Visa cost if obtained on arrival at Turkmenistan land borders (subject to change)
UK nationals (up to 10 days’ duration) (70+15=) 85 USD (to be paid by each person, even if all arrive on 1 LOI)
All other nationals (up to 10 days’ duration) (40+15=) 55 USD per person (to be paid by each person, even if all arrive on 1 LOI)
Plus 4 USD administration fee per person (or per LOI, if more people on 1 LOI)

UK nationals (11-20 days’ duration) (100+15=) 115 USD (to be paid by each person, even if all arrive on 1 LOI)
All other nationals (11-20 days’ duration) (60+15=) 75 USD (to be paid by each person, even if all arrive on 1 LOI)
Plus 4 USD administration fee per person (or per LOI, if more people on 1 LOI)

The cost of a visa at the Turkmenistan Embassy abroad is not known to us and should be checked in advance at the embassy directly. Turkmen Embassies can be found in Armenia, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Austria, Belgium, Belarus, Germany, Georgia, France, China, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, UAE, UK, Ukraine, USA, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkey.
Check the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan for the most recent information, and contact the embassies prior to arriving there to collect your Turkmen visa, as there may be differences between various embassies in terms of visa cost and duration, and processing requirements and their duration.
On Turkmenistan LOI’s there is no indication about the location where the visa must be picked up (this is the case for Uzbek LOI’s). The visa can be picked up at a location of choice by each person listed on the LOI individually.

Applications for Turkmen LOI’s can be done as a group, but visa will be issued individually, in each person’s passport.

ARRIVAL
PROCEDURES and REGISTRATION At the time of writing, each arriving citizen must also take a rapid covid test at the airport of Ashgabat or a land border post. The cost of a rapid covid test is $ 33, and the waiting time for the results is about 1-2 minutes.

Meeting of the guide at Ashgabat airport: on arrival in Turkmenistan, a local representative will meet you. Having collected your luggage and passed through customs, please make your way out of the terminal building, through the main exit and look for the representative. They will have a white board with your name on.
The representative will issue you with any necessary documentation, accompany you to your vehicle for the transfer to your hotel and assist with your hotel check-in.

Entry: land border crossing procedures (approximate description)
Exit the building. When people are gathering in one spot, they are waiting for a shuttle bus to take them (partially) across the no-man’s territory to the Uzbekistan side of the border. Keep some pocket money in either local currency or USD cash to pay for the shuttle bus. It may occur that no shuttle bus service is available, and you will have to walk the distance. In case of the Farab border post, this is a significant stretch of desert territory without trees or other form of shade. Be sure to have a comfortable portable suitcase or backpack, and carry sufficient water with you.
Arrival at gate of the border post (fenced terrain with buildings)
Upon entering the border post gateway, a uniformed border official may ask to see your passport
Walk across the terrain to (usually the right side of) the border post building (just follow the flow of other people going there). Toilets are available in a separate structure. Smoking is strictly forbidden.
At the time of writing (January 2024) passengers must take the rapid covid test upon arrival at the border post. The cost of the test is 33 USD, the waiting time for the results is about 15 minutes. In case you have booked guide services also for your border transfers, the guide will aim to meet you here in the building, and assist you with the below passport, visa and customs procedures.
Hand your passport(s) and print copy of the Letter of Invitation (LOI) to the passport official (please put the passport in the same order as on the LOI in case of groups; please gather all passports together, instead of passing passport control one by one).
Passport officer will check and start issue of visa(s) and hands you a receipt with instructions to go pay the bill.
Pay for visa(s) and migration tax at the cashier’s counter, which is located next to the passport officer’s desk.
Put all your luggage through security check (x-ray machine)
Fill in a customs declaration form (2 copies to be sure; usually they will let you keep the second copy). For groups, you can usually fill in one form for all group members, and write at the top of the paper “JOHNSON+5” for example.
Upon departing from Turkmenistan you will not be asked for such a declaration filled in at the point of entering Turkmenistan
Driver will be waiting at the car park in front of the border gate and hold a sign with your (company’s) name on it (he is not allowed in the border post area).

Exit: land border crossing procedures (approximate description)
Arrival by Nomads Life company vehicle at gate of the border post (where all vehicles, taxis, minibuses gather)
Driver will park the car in front of the border gate and say farewell (he is not allowed in the border post area).
Upon entering the border post gateway, a uniformed border official will ask to see your passport
Walk across the terrain to (usually the right side of) the border post building (just follow the flow of other people going there). Toilets are available in a separate structure. Smoking is strictly forbidden.
Fill in a customs declaration form (2 copies to be sure; usually they will let you keep the second copy). Fill this declaration also when you have not filled out one upon arrival by plane at Ashgabat Airport. Upon departing from Turkmenistan you will not be asked for such a declaration filled in at the point of entering Turkmenistan.
Put all your luggage through security check (x-ray machine)
Show your passport to the passport official (these usually speak little English); he will return the passport to you after having stamped your exit stamp in your passport; your Travel Pass is sometimes returned to you and sometimes not.

Please note:
In case some or many other people are in front of you at the border post, the above procedures can take up quite some time. Our Uzbek/Iranian partner understands this, and your driver and/or guide (if you booked such services) will never leave the border post before he has met you; he/she knows that sometimes delays can be significant. There is no reason to be nervous if you see that you are getting delayed. In case the plane departure is delayed, or the arrival process takes longer than usual, our driver is in contact with our office staff and they in turn with the Uzbek/Iranian partner company. He will never leave the airport before he has met you.

On the morning after your arrival, the Turkmenistan Tourist Registration Office (TRO) will begin a registration process. For such purpose, our staff will ask for your passport. The TRO will register you and place a stamp in your passport. Passports will be returned once the full registration process is complete.
On some occasions, the process can be slightly delayed and therefore we recommend that you carry an extra copy of your passport with you.

3. HEALTH Sunstroke and dehydration are the two main risks to your health in the Turkmen sunshine. A head cover and drinking sufficient fluids (water, juice, soda, tea, soup, etc.) will largely protect you against these risks.
The Turkmen diet is varied, and includes both meat dishes and soups, and as well as plenty of fruits and vegetables. However, it is advisable to bring sachets of ORS, travel tablets and anti-diarrhea tablets with you.

In Turkmenistan there are plenty of pharmacies, and many are open 24/7. Yet, for particular personal health matters, it is better to bring your own medication from home. In case you are carrying medication on prescription, it is recommended that you bring a copy of your doctor’s prescription, in case customs officials request to see such.
Turkmenistan has good regional hospitals and an impressive variety of specialist hospitals in the capital. SOS medevac procedures are in place.

3a. Immunization At the time of writing (January 2024) passengers must take the rapid covid test upon arrival at the border post. The cost of the test is 33 USD, the waiting time for the results is about 1-2 min. Payment for the test can be made in cash only.
Please contact your doctor or travel clinic for advice about other inoculations before departure. There are no other compulsory inoculations required for entry into Turkmenistan, although protection against diphtheria, polio, typhoid, tetanus and hepatitis A is advised.

3b. Drinking water Never drink from the taps, whatever category of hotel you are staying in. Drink only bottled water and check the seal is secure when you receive it. There is no need to take water purification tablets, as it is easy to buy bottled water.
In larger hotels, you will often find flasks of water. In the bigger city hotels, ice is generally made from purified water and is safe to drink. However, ice in smaller restaurants and hotels may not be. Always check if you are unsure.

3c. Food Avoid eating and drinking local products from street vendors and restaurants with suspect hygiene or refrigeration practices. We recommend avoiding salads (washed in water) and peeling all fruit before eating it, to avoid any illness. Uncooked fish / seafood and vegetables are best avoided.

3d. Swimming pool safety It is advisable to be aware of whether or not there is a lifeguard and / or the availability of assistance when you wish to use the pool.
We strongly recommend that you check the layout and depth of the pool before you first use it. Diving restrictions should be observed, and you should be aware that tiles around the pool may be slippery. Please familiarize yourself with what to do in the case of an emergency.

3e. Beach safety We strongly advise that you check if there are lifeguards and a flag warning system in place when swimming in the sea. Please ensure you are aware what the flags mean, especially those that tell you when and where it is dangerous to swim. Be aware of local conditions; tides, winds and, in particular, currents, which can make even the safest beach hazardous.

3f. Medicine If you are taking medicine for conditions such as diabetes or heart problems, make sure you carry the necessary medicines in your hand luggage at all times, in case your main luggage is delayed.

Note on personal medicine use
ANY medications containing tramadol, morphine, opiates or any other similar constituent component that may be considered as narcotic drug, which is widely used as pain medication in a number of countries worldwide, have been prohibited from import into Turkmenistan or transfer across the territory of the country, except when a doctor’s prescription and pharmaceutical passport can be shown, that clearly indicates that the specific person requires this specific medication. Both documents must be in English language, and must be signed and stamped by the relevant medical authority in the country of the person’s origin

Please see a Drug List prohibited for import into Turkmenistan in separate file

3g. Illness Please advise your guide or driver if you are feeling unwell at any stage of your holiday. They will then be able to offer assistance and arrange for any medical attention necessary.

3h. Contact Lenses If you use contact lenses we recommend that you refrain from using them and wear glasses where possible. This is due to the fact that Turkmenistan is a desert country and therefore wind and sand can affect them and lead to irritation.

4. LOCAL REPS & EXCURSIONS

Nomads Life legal responsibility to you is limited to the original booking you make with us before departure and excludes anything else you may book in Turkmenistan with any third party. Your legal redress in relation to such bookings will be against the third party with whom you made the booking and are likely to be subject to Turkmenistan law and jurisdiction.

5. TRAVELLING WITH CHILDREN When travelling to new destinations, it may take time for children to become accustomed to the unfamiliar sights, sounds and tastes experienced.

We do advise to take extra care while away and to ensure that you supervise your children at all times. You and your children should take particular care around balconies, playgrounds and swimming pools. In some destinations, medical assistance may not be available at the hotels or may be some distance away.
Nomads Life vehicles do not have child car seats. Children can travel only on a rear seat:
and wear an adult seat belt if they’re 3 or older
without a seat belt if they’re under 3

6. LANGUAGE Turkmen is the official language. Russian is widely spoken.

7. FOOD Turkmen cuisine is varied and influenced by both Russian and other central Asian nations such as Uzbekistan. It includes meat dishes, soups as well as plenty of fruit and vegetables. Most cafes and restaurants offer a large list of salads and side dishes (rice, fried potatoes, pasta, and mashed potatoes). Food is not often heavy on spices, but herbs such as parsley, coriander, basil and dill are frequently added. Bread is a must for every meal, often a piece of fresh Turkmen flat round bread baked in clay ovens known as churek.

Other traditional dishes include chorba, a meat and vegetable soup; plov, rice with mutton, onions, carrots, spices, raisins, peas or quinces; manty, steamed dumplings filled with lamb; qu’urma, lamb cooked in its own fat; ichlekli, a meat and onion pie and gutap, a pie filled with meat, potatoes, spinach and pumpkin.

7a. Food prices Any meals additional to those stated in your meal basis need to be paid for at the end of each hotel stay using USD cash or credit cards. In the smaller hotels and at lunch stops, normally payment must be made in local currency.
Hotels will demand payment in USD for certain services. Please remember to check the exact amount and currency used in service listings as well as payment methods available prior to using any hotel services.
As a general guideline, a meal purchased in a hotel will be between US$ 20-30 per person and in a local restaurant US$ 15-20 per person.

8. DRINK Tea is the staple drink. Local people prefer green tea, gok chai. Gatyk, a thick yoghurt drink, is often served with breakfast.
If you want to try the local beer, ask for the brand Berk or Zip; however, these can be hard to find in the general tourist outlets. Turkmenbashi labelled vodka is also available in some hotels, restaurants and cafes, and in any liquor shop.

8a. Drink prices Local beer in hotels would be approximately US$10; imported beer is approximately US$15-18 in a hotel. Soft drinks such as mineral water are generally US$2-5 in a hotel.
Please note imported spirits can be very expensive in Turkmenistan.

9. MONEY The local currency is the Turkmen manat, which divides into 100 tenge.

9a. Exchange rate For current exchange rate information please visit https://www.xe.com/
This will take you to the Turkmenistan currency information on the XE website. The rates change daily.

9b. Banking hours Monday to Friday: 9 am to 4 pm
Saturday:                                           9 am to 12 am

9c. Cash You can convert US dollars (clean undamaged, non-ruptured and unwritten banknotes printed on or after 2006) into the local currency manat (TMT) at banks, and in exchange offices. Please ask your guide or the driver to advice you the nearest exchange office or bank.
At the moment of writing (January 2024) it is impossible to change TMT back into foreign currency so do not change too much money as you may be stuck with Manat upon leaving Turkmenistan.
We strongly recommend you to bring USD over euros as a currency for exchange.

9d. Credit cards A limited number of 5-star hotels in Ashgabat will accept them as a form of payment for in room purchases. We therefore advise you not to rely on these as a form of payment.
There is only one bank in Ashgabat where you can withdraw cash from your Visa or Mastercard, and that is the State Bank for Foreign Economic Affairs located at Garashsyzlyk Ave. 1986, Ashgabat 744036. You can visit the bank between 09:30 AM to 03:30 PM on weekdays, and between 09:30 AM to 12:00 PM on Saturdays (closed on Sundays). To withdraw cash, you must visit cashier number 32 and provide your passport along with your Visa or Mastercard. Please note that the withdrawal will be in US dollars and a commission of around 3-3.5% of the withdrawal amount will be deducted.

9e. Traveller’s cheques It is not possible to change traveller’s cheques. You are therefore advised to bring sufficient cash and credit cards.

9f. Cash machines
ATM machines are available in a limited number of 5-star hotels in the capital, only VISA and MasterCard cards accepted, withdrawal is in Turkmen Manat only at official rate 3.5 TMT for 1 USD.

9g. Taxes The migration tax is US$14 per person and is payable on arrival in Ashgabat airport. Please note rates are subject to change without notice. At the moment of writing it’s not possible to pay for your visa and migration tax upon arrival at Ashgabat Airport by VISA or MasterCard

Since 1 July 2017, the State Committee for Tourism of Turkmenistan issued decree 79 and it concerns the payment of a tourist fee of 2 USD tax per person per night, for all foreign citizens using accommodation in Turkmenistan. From 1st July 2017 onwards, all foreigners staying in hotels will be charged directly by the hotels at checkout. The tourist fee has to be paid in cash USD and will be applicable for the number of nights the tourists were accommodated. Clients will receive an invoice with the amount mentioned. Payment of tourist fee by credit card is possible at hotels in Ashgabat only.

9h. Tipping All the drivers and guides have been fully paid, however, providing gratuities for small services is expected as part of the culture in Turkmenistan and tips are welcomed in foreign or local currency, although this is not mandatory. If you feel, you have received good service it is better to tip high or else not to tip at all, explaining the reason for dissatisfaction early on in the tour. Low tips can be seen as a sign of disrespect to guides and drivers. For the group tour, we recommend tipping no less than US$10 per person for the guide who is with you for the duration of the tour. We recommend the same or higher for the driver if this driver has been with you for the duration of the tour including the drive in the desert. If you do not need the help of porters, you should say so firmly.
There may be more than one driver on a group tour in addition to your national guide who will accompany you from the beginning to the end of the tour. On private tours, instead of one national guide several local guides may be used. We therefore advise you to ensure that you have sufficient currency for tipping throughout your trip.

9i. Excess Currency Exchange bureaus in Turkmenistan stopped selling foreign currency in January 2016, so we would recommend our clients to exchange only small amount of USD upon arrival in the country, to avoid any excess of Turkmen currency at the end of their trip.

10. TRANSPORT
10a. Flights For international flights, please aim to check in two to three hours prior to departure. In case you will apply for your visa on arrival, please ensure that you have a good quality print out of your LOI with you when checking in for your international flight. You will be refused to board the plane in case the Airlines staff cannot see a copy of this letter.
For internal flights, our local representatives (driver or guide) will advise you of the pick-up time from your hotel. Baggage allowance for domestic flights (Economy class is only available) is generally 20kg. Turkmenistan Airways, using Boeing aircraft only, carry out such flights.
On all flights, sharp metal objects such as penknives, scissors and metal nail files stored in your hand luggage may be confiscated due to security requirements. As such, these should be kept in your checked-in luggage to avoid delays and inconvenience.
In accordance with the recommendations from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), there are new aviation security control guidelines for screening liquids, gels and aerosols carried in cabin baggage on international flights.
All liquids, gels and aerosols in cabin baggage have to be carried in containers with a capacity not greater than 100ml. Liquids, gels and aerosols carried in containers larger than 100ml are not to be accepted, even if the container is only part-filled.
Containers have to be placed in a transparent resettable plastic bag of a maximum capacity not exceeding one liter. The containers must fit comfortably within the transparent plastic bag, which should be completely closed.
The plastic bag has to be presented separately from other cabin baggage for visual examination at the screening point. Only one transparent plastic bag per passenger is permitted.
Exemptions would be made for medications, baby milk / food and special dietary requirements, subject to verification.
On domestic flights: it is allowed to bring 5 kg of hand luggage (carry-on luggage) and 20 kg of checked luggage into the plane free of charge. When the total weight of the luggage is 25 kg, but hand luggage is a bit more and checked luggage a little less, that is no problem (1-2 kg difference maximum). Both the hand luggage and the checked luggage will be weighed at the check-in counter. Payment for excess luggage for foreign nationals is in USD, and is 3-5 USD per kg, dependent on the flight. Payment for expected excess luggage cannot be done online at the Turkmenistan Airlines website. Nomads Life cannot make advance payment for expected excess luggage for guests. Payment can only be done at the spot, at the airport at the cashier’s desk.
Please note that airport staff may request $10 to wrap each checked-in suitcase in protective plastic. This charge does not apply to hand luggage.

10b. Roads The road network in Turkmenistan is limited to connections between Ashgabat, the five regional capitals and the 15 district capitals. Roads outside Ashgabat may not be of good quality (potholed, unpaved or uneven). Some of the route sections covered in the group tour itinerary such as the drive to the Yangikala canyons is on gravel tracks. Distances covered may be long, particularly the mentioned route to Yangikala.
For transfers and excursions, we use a range of air-conditioned vehicles, from a saloon car and SUVs / 4x4s to minibuses and coaches, depending on group size. These are the best available.
The SUVx / 4x4s used on excursions to Darwaza and Yangikala and desert crossing, are foreign-brand vehicles with three or five passenger seats.

11. CLIMATE The climate is sharply continental with hot summers and mild winters. Overall precipitation is low, about 240 mm a year, with the majority of it occurring between March and May. With over 250 days of sunshine, Turkmenistan is often called the country of eternal sunshine. Summer is very dry with mid-summer temperatures reaching highs of 50C. Winter is mild with average temperatures below freezing for only a few days in January and February. However, in places like Dashoguz in the north of the country winter can be very harsh.

12. WHAT TO TAKE
12c. Before you go
In preparation for your trip through Turkmenistan, please bear in mind the following:
Bring cash USD bank notes (do not rely on EURO, credit cards or travelers cheques for your local expenses in Turkmenistan; visa, migration tax and vehicle transit costs can be paid in cash USD exclusively)
Bring some paper copies of your passport, while our staff takes your original passport for the registration on arrival procedure that is usually done on the first working day after your first night’s accommodation in a hotel or motel.
Bring a mobile phone in order to contact our agency in case of unexpected delays in arriving at the Turkmen border; this way we can also contact you as soon as your LOI scan is waiting in your email inbox. A mobile phone is particularly useful for contact with us from Baku, in case you plan to take the cargo ferry to Turkmenbashi
Bring some properly packed print copies of the LOI, to be handed over to the visa authorities at the point where you intend to collect your visa on arrival. Or:
Determine several possible locations on your way to Turkmenistan where you can access your email and print the Turkmenistan LOI, prior to your arrival at the land border where you intend to collect your visa and enter Turkmenistan
Bring a head torch, flip-flops and a small towel for camp nights. A mirror and/or an inside sleeping sack (thin, silk) is recommended, too.
Bring a scarf for accessing local mosques (women)
Bring a medium- to long-sleeved shirt and trousers for accessing mosques (for men)
Do not bring and wear tank-tops outside hotels (sleeveless shirts are fine)
Do not bring and wear shorts outside hotels (knee-long trousers are fine)
Bring appropriate (light but sturdy) footwear for travel in mountains, canyons and desert areas
Bring your doctor’s prescription for any personal medication that you require and plan to bring with you
Bring glasses as alternative to contact lenses, in case the desert sand irritates your eyes

12a. Clothing Lightweight cotton clothing is suitable for most times of the year. However, for the evenings, and early mornings, a light sweater or fleece jacket will come in handy. If travelling in the winter, warmer layers and protection against possible snowy conditions are recommended. Many of the sites are open-air, and there is a lot of walking involved so a pair of lightweight boots or trainers is necessary for walking over rough terrain. Hats, suntan lotion, sunglasses, a torch and insect repellent are advisable. There is no formal dress code in most of the hotels, but some people do change for the evenings.

As in most Islamic countries, women should wear long skirts and ensure their shoulders are covered when visiting mosques and other religious places. You will also be asked to remove your shoes in such places. It is advisable to take a shawl or scarf for use at sites where the head should be covered. Women may wear knee-long skirts and sleeveless shirts on all other occasions. Men may wear knee-long shorts and T-shirts. Swimwear should only be worn around the hotel pool area or the beach.

12b. Camping If your itinerary includes overnight (s) in camping in the desert, for this we recommend the following items: sandals / slippers, hand sanitizer, wet wipes and a small towel. The camp will provide a sleeping mat, but if you have back problems, you may wish to bring your own for comfort. The camp also provides sleeping bags but you may also wish to bring a small sleeping bag liner.

13. SECURITY The following advice will lessen the risk to you and your belongings:

Take the absolute minimum of valuable items with you.
A camera is a necessity for most travelers, but if it is possible to keep it in a jacket pocket, please do so. An extra battery for your camera is also advisable as there will be no place to charge batteries at the overnight camp.

It is not advisable to take valuable jewelry.
Cash kept on your person should be kept to the minimum required for a particular excursion.
Where possible, leave valuables, documents and passports in your hotel safety deposit box. Luggage is particularly vulnerable at airports and where crowds gather.
Do not leave your belongings with any stranger even for a moment.
It is advisable to either, carry a photocopy of your passport (and visa if applicable) with you while abroad or ensure a copy is left with relatives at home. This will enable the local embassy or high commission to arrange a duplicate copy if the original should be lost or stolen. If you do take copies with you while abroad, please ensure these are kept separately to your original documents.
There is a chance that police for a random check will stop the vehicle you are traveling in. Always let the driver deal with the situation and never attempt to help, get angry or take pictures.

14. LOCAL LAWS & CUSTOMS

14 a. Import regulations
14b. Smoking Free import for passengers of 18 years or older:
– 2 packs of tobacco products;
– 1,5 liters of alcoholic beverages;
– personal belongings up to a reasonable value
-it is strictly forbidden to bring drones and their parts (for example, a remote control) to Turkmenistan. If drones or their parts are found in the luggage, these will be confiscated by the custom.

As a general rule it is against the law to smoke in outdoor public locations although you are allowed to smoke outside some hotels. The smoking ban is particularly enforced in and around the airport. If you are caught you may be fined. It is acceptable to smoke inside some restaurants, cafes and nightclubs so do not be alarmed if you see someone smoking indoors.
It’s prohibited to import more than 2 packs of cigarettes into Turkmenistan.

14c. Photography
Photographing official buildings is forbidden. This includes potentially sensitive sites such as airports, military barracks, police stations, government buildings, embassies, the presidential palace and in general buildings guarded by uniformed men.  It’s prohibited to take pictures at the bazaars in the capital and centers of regions – Mary, Dashoguz, Turkmenabat, Turkmenbashi, Balkanabat
You risk having your camera temporarily confiscated and the photo being deleted. Also, be careful when photographing local people.
Historical parks and sites such as Merw, Gonur-Depe, Mary Museum and Carpet Museum may apply photography fees, which can be quite expensive, up to US$4 per photo.  Please check with your guide if you are unsure.

15. SHOPPING Popular items to purchase in Turkmenistan include rugs in all colors and shapes, colorful scarves, woolen slippers, and delicate jewelry.
Also lookout for Turkmenbashi memorabilia such as golden statues and books. The Ruhnama book explores the views of the former president on what it means to be a Turkmen.
The sale of cigarettes has been restricted to state-run shops and outlets.

15a. Exporting carpets You will need export permission for carpets purchased in a bazaar or private shop. The Expert Commission in Ashgabat (opening hours Mon to Fri 14:30 to 17:30, Sat 10:00 to 12:00) has to certify that the carpet can be exported. When purchasing a carpet without approval, you risk having to leave it behind. Also some carpets carry certain fees that need to be paid before taking it out of the country making them very expensive.
If you buy a carpet in a state or hotel souvenir shop, fees are normally included in the price. These shops will sell the carpet with the export approval and fee already included in the price. It is best to ask your guide for advice on these items.

18a. Hotels Hotels tend to charge high fees for making overseas calls, so it is advisable to check the rates with reception before making any call or use a public telephone booth or office.

18b. Mobile phones Not all foreign mobile service providers have a contract with any mobile phone provider in Turkmenistan and therefore your mobile phone may not work during your stay in Turkmenistan. If it does, it will mainly be in the larger towns such as Ashgabat.  The cell phone provider in Turkmenistan is TMCELL. Please contact your own service provider to ask for an update on their service contract with TMCELL.
Please note in order to send a message or make a call from your foreign mobile phone from inside Turkmenistan via TMCELL, you should dial 810 followed by the number you wish to contact, or put a “+” symbol before the country code (instead of 00 followed by the number).

We recommend keeping the use of mobile phones to a minimum in Turkmenistan due to the high charges it incurs compared to other countries.

19. ELECTRICS The electrical current in Turkmenistan is 220 volts. We recommend you take a two round pin travel adaptor with you.
